A shoe boil is the swelling of the elbow of a horse due to irritation caused by the hoof striking the elbow when lying down. Also called capped elbow. This affliction does not lead to lameness.
If left unattended the bulge may become hard, fibrous and permanent. Though not known to cause any harm except cosmetic looks.
